Ready, Set, Apply!

The College Application

College Talk is a publication for students and parents on topics related to college selection and admission. This issue offers insights on the college application process and is published by NewBeginnings Career and College Guidance.

Even as you are enjoying your status as seniors, it’s time to keep your eyes on the final hurdle ahead - the application process. You should have a list of schools (no more than 8) which interest you and these should span three categories:

Reaches -"dream" school(s) where there is a chance of getting in, but it is slim.

Probables -most important category where there is a good chance of acceptance.

Safeties -strong possibility of acceptance, and you would be excited to go there.

Overall, you should be prepared and happy to go to any of the schools you apply to.

What’s the best way to stay on top of the application process?

Organize!

bulletWrite to schools for applications (UC and CSU are at school)
bulletCreate a file and checklist of requirements for each college
bulletPhotocopy each application
bulletMake a chart of application, test, financial aid deadlines etc.
bulletEvaluate test scores and have testing agency send to colleges
bulletAsk for recommendations from teachers and counselors early. Provide resume and stamped addressed envelopes. (Write thank-you notes.)

Applications and Acceptances:

Early Action: Applications are usually due early fall or early winter, with college decisions made in December or January. Students are usually not required to notify college of their enrollment intentions until May 1.

Early Decision: Acceptance into an institution in early winter for the following fall. Applications are due in early fall. Students can apply to only one early decision school and, if accepted, must attend. Be sure to clarify with each college the differences between their Early Action and Early Decision policies. Some are confusing and overlapping, but true Early Decision is binding.

Regular: Varies for each school. Notification is usually March/April and student decisions are due May 1.

Rolling: An application is reviewed as soon as the file is complete, and an answer sent soon after. Student decisions due May 1.

Keep in mind two questions,"Where can I get in?"and "Where can I do well?"

"Help your child set himself or herself up for success. Make sure that your child applies to at least two colleges where he or she will be accepted." Dalton, Middlebury College
